Construction has experienced possibly the greatest change in the wake of Industry 4.0. Despite resistance to adoption and integration of software and technology, the Digital Construction sector is expected to continue driving digital transformation initiatives through 2019 globally.
Early adopters will begin experiencing advanced technology and true workflow optimization, while the CEO of Triax technology also claims that “IoT technology and analytics will become more firmly entrenched in construction processes”.
Real-time collaboration across a project’s lifecycle will continue to advance thanks to increased data sharing from major industry players, including project knowledge and experiences.

Wearables
Wearable technology incorporates the likes of advanced GPS software, sensors, reality capture and feature recognition. Effective on-site in several key areas, health and safety appears to be the significant growth area for wearables over the course of 2019.
Wearable technology is being delivered in a variety of forms including eyewear and headwear. Late in 2018, Dubai based WakeCap claim to have released the “first wearable product to overcome the challenge of digitising the workforce”, whilst many industry professionals believe integration of wearables will increase over 2019.
BIM
Is this even a Digital Construction blog if BIM isn’t mentioned? BIM has taken workflow optimization to new levels and many predict that BIM Level 2 and Level 3 adoption will increase over 2019.
Whilst 3D BIM is the BIM we’re most familiar with, 4D, 5D and 6D BIM are also on the horizon which address costing, project lifecycle information and construction sequencing.
At it’s core, achieving sophisticated collaboration across a projects lifecycle requires BIM and it’s further evolution can catapult construction into a new era.
Robotics & Drones
Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) or drones have quite literally propelled themselves into being one of Digital Constructions most exciting innovations… and an airports worst nightmare. From bridge inspection to 3D imaging, drones are an essential on any construction site.
AI and automation technology will also expand onto building sites in 2019 via advanced sensors and autonomous technology such as Trimble’s autonomous solutions. So don’t be too alarmed if you see a dumper truck without a driver in 2019!
